The Art of Taking Root

Ballet Bridges holds a goal to spread the love of an art to communities regardless of financial status or ability. With this huge ambition to provide greater accessibility in dance, not only across the United States but worldwide, a natural question rose: how could a team of 38 possibly reach it all? The answer, it turned out, was not to stretch further. It was to establish deeper.

With the addition of the Ballet Bridges Ambassador program, personal projects were introduced, which in turn offered a way to expand our reach through individual initiative. One of the expressions of that initiative is the chapter model. Chapters are able to be established in any community with a member willing to take charge. From there, the opportunities to inspire, empower, and support multiply.

One example of this goal being carried out is through a movement-based curriculum, giving dance directly into the hands of kids with disabilities or low-income backgrounds, making dance a tool not just for artistry, but for confidence and community.

WHERE WE’VE ESTABLISHED

Today, Ballet Bridges chapters have rooted into a wide array of high schools, universities, and community centers across North America:

MICHIGAN

University of Michigan

ONTARIO, CANADA

University of Waterloo

COLORADO

Durango High School

CALIFORNIA

Laguna Beach High School

MICHIGAN

Oakland County

NEW YORK

New York University

Each of these chapters didn't simply appear; they were built. Ambassadors partnered with local school districts, disability support centers, and community hubs to create a space where dance could live. A space that, for many of our students, had never been made available to them before.

WHAT DOES A CHAPTER ACTUALLY LOOK LIKE?

The structure of a chapter is intentional and unique in every detail. Classes run once a week for a full semester. Each session is guided by at least one Lead Instructor and supported by a team of five to ten volunteers.  All of them have completed mandatory training before ever stepping into a class. Through the structure and classes offered, chapters are better able to support a variety of individuals within a community. They also support a variety of impact such as:

DISABILITY INCLUSION

Advocacy frameworks and adaptive technique built into every class plan.

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT

Techniques designed for neurodiverse and mixed-ability learning environments.

DANCE FOUNDATIONS

Core terminology so every volunteer — dancer or not — can fully participate.

1:1 CONNECTION

A 1:1 or 1:2 volunteer-to-student ratio, because no dancer goes unseen.

Because to teach well, we must learn first. That belief is baked into the foundation of what it means to be a Ballet Bridges volunteer.

Every program ends not with a test or a grade, but with a showcase — a grand finale where families gather to witness what their dancers have built over months of quiet, joyful effort.

KEEPING IT FREE

The primary goal of every Ballet Bridges chapter is simple and unwavering: free, in-person classes for students who face barriers to dance education. To make that possible, chapters fundraise twice a year, pursue grants, and manage community donation drives for supplies and equipment. Accessibility is not an aspiration here but it is a requirement.

THE STAGE IS OPEN

Ballet Bridges grows because people choose to show up as volunteers, as donors, and as founders of something new in their own communities. If this work moves you, there is a place for you in it.

VOLUNTEER

Join a chapter near you and become the 1:1 support a dancer needs.

DONATE

Every contribution keeps our classes free and our doors wide open.
