Dance is often viewed as simply an artistic activity, but research is showing that it has the potential to also be a valuable tool in developing physical growth, cognitive function, and social awareness. Adaptive dance modifies traditional dance instruction so that individuals with disabilities can participate in meaningful ways and become successful in their dance journey. Unlike most rehabilitation programs, which focus mainly on physical progress, adaptive dance blends movement, artistic expression, music, and social interaction into a unique combination that helps participants develop important life skills.

Physical Benefits

Improved Balance and Motor Skills

One of the most prominent findings in this area of research is that adaptive dance brings improvement in balance and coordination. Dance is a sport that requires students to control posture, shift their weight, and coordinate movements with music while responding to changing directions. These skills strengthen gross motor skills and improve movement in everyday life. Children who participate in adaptive dance have demonstrated improvements in a variety of abilities, such as flexibility and movement quality (Anderson). This is especially vital for children with neuromotor conditions, such as cerebral palsy, in which balance and body control directly influence future independence (Lima, 2015). In addition, it was noted that an increased dopamine release can somewhat alleviate bradykinesia and stiff movements (Edwards, 2015).

Adaptive dance is an enjoyable form of exercise, and regular participation can help improve muscle strength, endurance, flexibility, and cardiovascular health, while encouraging children to remain physically active (Tao, 2022). Since many children with disabilities tend to participate less in physical activities than others their age, dance provides an engaging way for them to develop healthy movement habits.

Attention, Memory, and Executive Function

Learning choreography requires so much more than movement; dancers must remember sequences, process verbal and visual instructions, and solve challenges. Because of this, dance develops executive functioning, including strong memory, planning, and cognitive flexibility (Tao, 2022). This also suggests that adaptive dance may contribute to these essential academic and everyday life skills.

Confidence and Self-Esteem

One of the most meaningful benefits reported by parents was increased confidence in their dancer (Moula). While traditional sports may sometimes emphasize competition and victory, adaptive dance focuses on celebrating individual progress and creative expression. The measure of success in such a sport is personal growth rather than comparison with others. As children perform with peers, they develop confidence in their abilities and may become more willing to participate in other activities inside and outside the dance studio.

Emotional Expression and Mental Well-Being

Dance provides the invaluable opportunity to communicate emotion through movement, making it especially important for children who experience communication challenges. Participation has also been associated with improved mood, reduced anxiety, and greater enjoyment of physical activity (Moula).

Friendship and Inclusion

Adaptive dance classes help students naturally build connections with each other. Children practice taking turns, learning choreography together, and communicating with the instructor and other peers. Moreover, adaptive dance removes the barriers that traditionally limit the access of students with disabilities to performing arts. Rather than expecting participants to adjust to a rigid teaching style, instructors modify lessons so that each person can participate meaningfully, creating an environment where differences are respected and each dancer is valued for their unique abilities.

Adaptive Dance as Art and Rehabilitation

One of the greatest strengths of adaptive dance is that it combines multiple evidence-based approaches for rehabilitative care into an activity children enjoy and participate in. Dance incorporates aerobic exercise, balance training, motor learning, music, creativity, and social engagement simultaneously. As children focus more on enjoying their movement rather than the cognitive or socioemotional benefits, they stay engaged, motivated, and continue participating in adaptive dance.

Anderson, Jeffery T., et al.

Summary

Anderson and his team’s study focused on the effects of implementing dance for 43 children with various neurological disorders. The active group attended an hour-long virtual dance class for 10 weeks, while the control group spent the same time in a waiting room. In the end, the active group had an 82.6% attendance rate, much higher than that of the control group, which was 61.7%, while also showing significant improvement in motor skills.

Practical Application

Ballet Bridges can use this study to demonstrate the benefits that adaptive dance can bring to children with disabilities. Improvements in motor coordination were measured using the Motor Assessment Battery for Children Checklist, and the 21 children tested showed significant change for the better with a probability value of 5% (researchers are 95% confident that the dance intervention actually worked). This data can be used in website content, teacher training, and as evidence shown while securing a grant.

Belardinelli, Romualdo., et al.

Summary

Researchers wanted to determine whether waltz dancing could be a safe and effective form of exercise for people with chronic heart failure, so they enrolled 130 adults with stable heart failure and compared three groups over 8 weeks: a waltz dance group, a traditional exercise training group (cycling and strength training), and a control group that received no structured exercise. While participants in both the dance and exercise group saw improvements in the efficiency of their heart and lungs, dancers also bettered their quality of and enjoyment of exercise. And most importantly, waltz dancing was found to be equally as safe as conventional cardiac rehabilitation exercise, with no increase in adverse events during the study.

Practical Application

Although this study examined adults with chronic heart failure, it demonstrates that dance can be adapted into a safe and effective form of physical activity for those with medical conditions that can limit traditional exercise. For Ballet Bridges, these findings reinforce the importance of creating adaptive classes that provide enjoyable movement opportunities for participants with a wide range of physical and health-related needs.

Edwards, Scott. (2015)

Summary

This article, published by Harvard’s medical school, lists the neurological benefits of dancing and explains applications for those with disabilities. In a 2003 New England Journal of Medicine study, it was found that among 11 tested physical activities, dance was the only one that showed trends of lower dementia risk for its participants. Furthermore, research on patients with Parkinson’s disease by the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation showed that dance increases dopamine levels, which are crucial for body movement; as the disease advances, these chemicals are lost, making bradykinesia (slowed movement) one of the most common symptoms. Participants felt that many effects of bradykinesia, which is a symptom of many other neurological diseases as well, were somewhat lifted as they progressed in dance.

Practical Application

Ballet Bridges can use these findings to emphasize that adaptive dance encourages both physical movement and cognitive engagement. This evidence might be valuable when collaborating with therapists, special-needs departments, or families seeking activities that complement rehabilitation and developmental support.

Summary

This systematic report compiled 12 studies on the effects of dance on students with neurological disabilities. Across the studies, dance was associated with improvements in body function, activity, balance, participation, and overall well-being, however, the authors also concluded that the overall certainty of the studies is low due to small sample sizes and limited methodological quality.

Practical Application

Of all the sources, this is the one that most advocates for higher quality research. Ballet Bridges can use this review to educate families and schools about the benefits of adaptive dance while responsibly communicating that more research is needed in this field. In the future, Ballet Bridges may be able to quote the need for better studies to secure a grant that will allow them to run them.

This review examined 19 studies involving 521 children and adolescents aged 3- 18 with physical and developmental disabilities who participated in adapted dance programs lasting between 7 and 78 hours. Research indicated consistent improvements in physical outcomes - particularly balance and jumping ability - and identified promising evidence that dance may also improve cognitive, psychological, and social well-being

Summary

The findings were centered on interventions lasting 45-120 minutes, delivered 1-3 times a week in various countries, including the USA, the UK, Canada, South Korea, and Saudi Arabia. The tested children reported benefits in their socioemotional behavior, including improvements in self-confidence and resilience and lower levels of depression or anxiety.

Practical Application

This article mainly focuses on the importance of listening to the child’s perception of how the classes benefited them instead of solely relying on third-party viewers such as parents and instructors or visual evidence alone. At the beginning of the implementation of these lessons at Ballet Bridges, a form can be sent out measuring the quality of the instruction so that classes can be altered as necessary.
